OTTAWA - The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), today addressed the annual Canadian Women in Communications (CWC) Awards.
In her remarks, Minister Guergis congratulated the eight individuals and one organization receiving awards in recognition of their contributions to the field of communications in Canada, and their work to promote the advancement of women in the industry.
"Our Government is committed to helping Canadian women achieve success in all fields of endeavour, including the communications industry," Minister Guergis said. "That is why we are working to remove barriers, creating opportunities, and making it easier for women to participate in and contribute to the life of our country. For we know that when women prosper, Canada prospers."
"I applaud each of today's award recipients for their tremendous dedication, talent and skill," the Minister added. "In the truest sense, they are full participants - and an inspiration to us all."
Recipients of the 2009 Canadian Women in Communications Awards are:
- Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc., for the Woman of the Year Award.
- Xerox Canada for the CWC Employer of the Year Award.
- For the Excellence in Leadership Award:
- Nyla Ahmad, Vice President, New Venture Operations & Strategic Partnerships, Rogers Communications, Inc.;
- Rochelle Grayson, President, Work at Play;
- Lesley McFarlane, Director, Network Services Business Planning and Operational Performance, MTS Allstream Inc.;
- Robin McIntyre, Regional President - Ottawa, Rogers Communications Inc.;
- Annie Ménard, Vice-President, Expertech Network Installation Inc.;
- Margot M. Micallef, Q.C., Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Vista Radio Inc.; and
- Susan Wood, Manager, Partnership and Sponsorships, CBC British Columbia.
Since 1992, the CWC Annual Awards have celebrated the achievements of exceptional women and organizations in the Canadian communications industry, and those who have made an outstanding contribution to their advancement. The 2009 Awards were presented at a gala dinner, with more than 400 industry leaders from all sectors of the communications industry in attendance.
