Ottawa, Ontario (April 1, 2009) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, today announced the appointment of Sophie Pierre as Chief Commissioner of the British Columbia Treaty Commission.
Throughout her life, Sophie Pierre has exhibited all the traits of a true leader, not only on behalf of Aboriginal people but on behalf of a stronger Canada. Her vision, professionalism and determination will prove invaluable as we move forward with treaty negotiations in British Columbia.
Recipient of the Order of British Columbia, Ms Pierre has worked tirelessly throughout her adult life for the betterment of Aboriginal communities. Her work has earned accolades from all quarters, in part for her determined and successful pursuit of economic development opportunities for her community.
Ms Pierre served on the St. Mary’s Indian Band Council since being first elected in 1978 until her retirement in 2008. She served as elected Chief for 26 of the 30 years. Ms. Pierre was the Administrator of the Ktunaxa-Kinbasket Tribal Council from 1978 to 2003.
Ms Pierre’s appointment is for a term of three years. She will officially assume her new role at the British Columbia Treaty Commission on April 2, 2009.
The British Columbia Treaty Commission is the independent and neutral body established in 1992 to facilitate the negotiation of treaties with British Columbia First Nations. Sophie Pierre will join Commissioners Jody Wilson Raybould, Robert Phillips, Jerry Lampert and Dave Haggard, and will oversee the treaty commission’s activities.
