Ottawa, April 23, 2009 - Reading enriches us in many ways. Opening a book opens the door to a myriad of personal, cultural, and social adventures. Books enrich the lives of readers and writers alike. As readers, we should always be aware that books represent a livelihood for writers and a broader publishing industry, both online and in print.
On World Book and Copyright Day, we can all take a moment to reflect on the value of literary works to our society. Through the Book Publishing Industry Development Program, our Government helps provide Canadians and readers around the world with access to books by Canadian authors. In addition, the implementation of the new National Translation Program for Book Publishing will mean that more Canadians can read Canadian books in their language of choice.
This special day, instituted by UNESCO, also allows us to recognize the importance of respect for copyright. Our Government's Speech from the Throne on November 19, 2008, reaffirmed our commitment to update copyright and intellectual property laws.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the excellent work of all those who contribute, directly and indirectly, to making the book a recognized and inviting universe to travel to. I also invite Canadians of all ages to take time to read and get acquainted with a world of discovery, entertainment, and education.
