Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace:
"Today, Canadians pause to pay tribute to the men and women who have lost their lives or suffered injuries and illnesses due to workplace accidents.
"These accidents are tragic precisely because they are preventable. All Canadians deserve to work in an environment that is as healthy and safe as possible. No parent, spouse or other family member deserves to receive the tragic news that their loved one has been hurt or killed in an incident that could have been prevented.
"Workplace safety is a daily responsibility, shared by employers, workers, unions and government. Our government will continue to do our part to ensure that Canada's workplaces are safe, healthy and productive places for Canadians to work and succeed. There is no better way to protect Canadians from preventable accidents than by supporting education and awareness among workers themselves. We will continue to work with all of our partners to promote occupational health and safety in order to give Canadian workers the security and peace of mind they deserve."
