Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the 61st anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel:
“I am deeply honoured to extend my warmest greetings to all Canadians celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, marking the 61st anniversary of Israel’s independence.
“The creation of the State of Israel is a testament to the triumph of faith and perseverance over adversity. Israel is an enduring symbol for the world and a source of great inspiration. The resilience and determination that built this formidable, enterprising and democratic nation continues to hearten Jewish communities around the globe.
“This proud celebration affords us the opportunity to reflect on the events that have shaped Israel’s history, as well as the shared history between our two great nations. We count ourselves among Israel’s closest partners. Since its founding in 1948, Canada has supported Israel and its right to live in peace and security with its neighbours. We value this relationship and look forward to continued friendship and collaboration.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, please accept my best wishes for a memorable celebration and a prosperous and peaceful year ahead.”
