OTTAWA - This week Canada celebrates National Mining Week 2009 (May 11–17). The theme this year, Strengthening the competitiveness of a responsible Canadian mining sector through innovation, highlights the importance of ongoing innovation to prepare Canada's mining sector to take full advantage of the future economic rebound.
"Modern mining practices and ongoing research and development will help ensure the continued success of Canada's mining sector," said the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources. "Our Government has joined forces with industry and academia to further strengthen Canada's mining competitiveness throughout this challenging period."
Among the Government of Canada's new initiatives, the new Canada Mining Innovation Council will play a prominent role in promoting mining research, innovation and commercialization; the Green Mining initiative will focus on minimizing the environmental impact of mining; and the Corporate Social Responsibility Centre of Excellence will enhance the reputation of Canadian mining companies worldwide.
Mining takes place in almost every province and territory in Canada - from remote Aboriginal communities in the north to large urban centres in the south - creating jobs and business opportunities and supporting industries, workers and communities. In 2008, the industry directly employed more than 351,000 people and contributed about $40 billion to Canada's GDP.
As the global economy recovers from the recession, demand for minerals and metals is expected to increase. To help maintain Canada's position as a global mining giant, the Government of Canada is working with industry and other partners to further improve mining's competitiveness and environmental performance.
