OTTAWA, ONTARIO, May 1, 2009—The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, today marked International Workers’ Day by reiterating the government’s commitment to fostering safe and healthy workplaces.
“Our Government is working to help ensure Canadian businesses remain competitive and strong, and that workers can succeed in safe, healthy and productive workplaces,” said Minister Ambrose.
Canada’s Labour Program has been protecting the rights and well being of both Canadian workers and employers since 1900. The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards, and the Employment Equity Act, which promotes workplace equality.
Through the Labour Program, the government is working to reduce workplace injuries, including injuries due to poor ergonomics, and to help prevent violence in the workplace. Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the government has extended the Wage Earner Protection Program to cover termination pay and severance pay for workers whose employers go bankrupt.
“Today, we acknowledge the crucial contribution of Canadian workers to the strength and vitality of our great country,” said Minister Ambrose. “Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our Government is helping Canadians to weather the current global recession. And Canada has a highly-educated, skilled, largely mobile, modern workforce – a key asset in these challenging times. By working together, we can get through it and emerge more prosperous than ever.
