Vancouver, BC (May 15, 2009) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians, met with key Yukon leaders while in the territory reaffirming Canada's commitment to First Nations and Northerners.
After announcing the Northern portion of Canada's Community Adjustment Fund ($32.8 million) while in the Yukon, Minister Strahl also met with Premier Dennis Fentie to discuss a wide range of items. In a subsequent meeting between Minister Strahl and Grand Chief Andy Carvill of the Council of Yukon First Nations, the two once again engaged on issues at play in regards to the implementation of self-government agreements in the Yukon.
"The Government of Canada remains fully committed to this process, as we are with the implementation of all self-government agreements in Canada, including the renewal of financial arrangements," stated Minister Strahl. "I have been mandated through Cabinet to negotiate the renewal of the financial transfer agreements with self-governing Yukon First Nations and these talks are already underway."
Minister Strahl once again committed to attending an Intergovernmental Forum to be held in the territory in the coming months.
"This important Forum will provide the opportunity to continue discussions on implementation and fiscal arrangements with the Yukon First Nations and the Government of Yukon"
With over 20 agreements in different stages of implementation, Canada is taking stock of lessons learned and determining where we can make improvements to more effectively manage our federal responsibilities along with our partners in these matters.
