Ottawa, May 8, 2009 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing the celebration of Buddha’s birthday:
“For Buddhists around the world, tomorrow marks one of the most important observances of the year. It is a time to celebrate the birth, enlightenment and death of Siddhārtha Gautama, the Buddha.
Some Buddhists refer to this day as Vesak, while others celebrate it as Buddha’s Birthday or simply Buddha Day.
“In Canada, Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated by Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Official observances at temples are the focal point, though in many places across the country, festivities also feature community gatherings for the enjoyment of meals, music and dancing.
“For all Canadians, this important day provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions that Buddhists have made to this country’s rich and diverse heritage.
“As Prime Minister Harper has said, ‘Pluralism is the principle that binds our diverse peoples together.’
“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I offer my best wishes to all those celebrating tomorrow.”;
