PARRY SOUND, Ontario, May 22, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound–Muskoka and Minister of Industry, today announced two beautification projects that will benefit the town of Parry Sound in advance of the 2010 G8 Summit.
The projects, which together represent nearly $1.3 million in new investments in the heart of Parry Sound, are part of the G8 Infrastructure Fund. The projects include:
- Upgrades to Seguin Street, including sidewalk and tree replacement, at a cost of $1.1 million; and
- Market Square Park enhancements, including a large welcome granite stone for Bowes Street, new lighting for the concert stage and improvements to the downtown banner displays, at a cost of $194 000.
“Our government recognizes the tremendous economic benefit of tourism in the Parry Sound–Muskoka region,” said Minister Clement. “Through strategic investments in local infrastructure, we are ensuring that Parry Sound makes the most of the economic opportunities that follow from hosting this prestigious event. These projects will help Parry Sound put its best foot forward for our guests and visitors during the G8 Summit.”

These funds will go a long way to improve the pedestrian routes downtown, will enhance the appearance of our town core and will improve the welcoming atmosphere,” said Parry Sound Mayor Richard Adams on behalf of the Parry Sound Town Council.
The $50-million G8 Infrastructure Fund was set up in February 2009 and is dedicated to legacy projects in the Parry Sound–Muskoka area. This strategy corresponds with the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan to strengthen Northern Ontario communities.
The 2010 G8 Summit will generate significant short- and long-term economic benefits for the region and the province and will be an exceptional opportunity for Canada to shine on the world stage.
The G8 is composed of eight of the world's leading economic powers: Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Japan and Italy. The annual summit is a chance for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face to face and develop common approaches to current challenges facing the world.
