OTTAWA, May 23, 2009 - Canadian books enrich our cultural heritage–either by telling our stories, expressing our concerns, or feeding our societal debates. In Alberta and elsewhere in the country, the excellence, creativity, and originality of literary works born of the imagination of our writers infuse our literary scene with vitality and notable success.
Our Government believes in the importance of ensuring the development of the Canadian publishing industry. That is why we offer a variety of programs that help make this industry even more dynamic.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate all the winners of the 2009 Alberta Literary Awards. Your success shines a bright light on the entire cultural sector of your province. I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the Writers Guild of Alberta, who, through these annual awards, effectively highlight the work and talent of Albertan writers. I would also like to acknowledge the Writers Guild of Canada, a partner in this great celebration of Albertan literature, particularly with respect to the Danuta Gleed Literary Award.
