OTTAWA, May 6, 2009 - For more than 60 years, the prestigious Cannes Festival has paid tribute to some of the world's greatest films, many of which come from Canada.

Canadian filmmakers produce compelling, high-quality cinema enjoyed by audiences at home and around the world. Our Government understands that creativity and innovation are vital to Canada's vibrant cultural life and to our economic future, which is why we are investing significant levels of funding in Canadian arts and culture.

On behalf of the Government of Canada and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I congratulate the Canadian productions being recognized at the 2009 Festival de Cannes: Amreeka (Cherien Dabis), Carcasses (Denis Côté), J'ai tué ma mère (Xavier Dolan), Polytechnique (Denis Villeneuve), Runaway (Cordell Barker), and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a UK-Canada co-production directed by Terry Gilliam.
