Holding Bachelor degrees in both Civil Law and Common Law from McGill University, Suzanne Legault has been serving as Assistant Information Commissioner since June 18, 2007. As Assistant Information Commissioner, she has been involved in leading a fundamental cultural change in the organization, including the development of a new business model, the implementation of modern comptrollership, and the development of an IM/IT renewal strategy. In addition, in 2007, Ms. Legault was elected Chair of the Officers of Parliament Working Group, leading major policy files on behalf of Officers of Parliament with central agencies.
Prior to taking on her current role, Ms. Legault worked with Doctor David Zussman, Jarislowsky Chair in Public Sector Management at the University of Ottawa from 2006 2007. In that role, her many responsibilities included developing options to integrate competition policy in rule making across departments, in accordance with international experiences and economic literature. Ms. Legault also partnered with university Research Fellows, the Canada School and the Community of Federal Regulators to develop a learning agenda for federal regulators. She developed a network within academia, the public service and among business leaders.
Ms. Legault began her career in the Public Service in 1996 at the Competition Bureau where she gained extensive enforcement and litigation experience in competition law. From 2000 2001, she served as Legal Counsel with the Department of Justice, before returning to the Competition Bureau where she was Assistant Deputy Commissioner, Legislative Affairs, then Deputy Commissioner, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs.
Prior to joining the Public Service, Ms. Legault practised law as a criminal defence lawyer from 1991 to 1996, as well as Crown prosecutor from 1994 to 1996.
