OTTAWA, June 9, 2009 - Billy Elliot is the moving story of a talented young boy who overcomes tremendous obstacles to pursue his passion for ballet. This engaging story can be seen as a metaphor for the thousands of young Canadians who are working tirelessly to make their dreams of a promising career in the arts come true.
At the tender age of 15, David Alvarez has won a 2009 Tony Award for his outstanding performance in the title role of the Broadway production Billy Elliot: The Musical. In achieving this important recognition at such a young age, Mr. Alvarez serves as an inspiration to young people throughout this country.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate David Alvarez on his Tony Award and to wish him all the best in the future.
