As students from Kennebecasis Valley (KV) High School enjoyed their first week of summer vacation, they received more good news with an announcement that the KV sports fields will be getting a much-needed overhaul thanks to a $250,000 investment from the federal government. The funding announcement was made today by Saint John MP Rodney Weston on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency).
"The Government of Canada recognizes the need within so many Canadian communities for better recreational facilities," said MP Weston. "Our $250,000 contribution under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) fund toward the KV sports fields will expand valuable local infrastructure, and help to improve the health and quality of life for the students at this school and residents of this region."
"We are very pleased and excited with the federal government’s support to this important community project," said Robert Munro, Co-Chair of the KV Fields project. "We have been working closely with an engineering firm to prepare costing proposals based on the identification of work that needs to be done; and we can now move forward to finalize decisions on the scope of the project and the sequence of work."
The project will replace two existing sod sports fields, located behind Kennebecasis Valley High School, with improved multi-purpose artificial turf surfaces. These more durable fields will allow for a longer, safer playing season.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA, contributed $250,000 through the Recreational Infrastructure (RInC) program; while the Town of Quispamsis invested $300,000.
Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities. Under RInC, the Government of Canada will typically fund up to 33 per cent of eligible costs. The remaining funding will be leveraged from other project stakeholders such as provincial, territorial, municipal and other partners. The federal contribution to any project receiving funding under the program will not exceed $1 million. Projects will be selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011.
