Washington, DC - (May 28, 2009) With their fellow Team Canada members cheering them on in the audience today, 13-year-old Claudine Broussard ,11-year-old Veronica Penny and our 2009 Canspell National Champion, 10-year-old Laura Newcombe, spelled their hearts out before being eliminated in Round Five of the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
- 13-year-old Claudine Broussard of Port Hawkesbury, NS, sponsored by the Cape Breton Post, correctly spelled BECKMESSER in Round Four of the Semifinals, but misspelled EURYSTOMATOUS in Round Five
- 11-year-old Veronica Penny of Hamilton, sponsored by CHCH Hamilton correctly spelled CLARY in Round Four, but misspelled MACLE in Round Five
- 10-year-old Laura Newcombe of Toronto, ON, sponsored by National Post, our Canwest Canspell National Champion, correctly spelled TOURELLE in Round Four, but misspelled HYALITHE in Round Five

Canwest Canspell and presenting sponsor Canada Post are extremely proud of all Team Canada members. Canada Post paid the $99 Scripps fee for each of the 1,700 schools which participated in Canspell program this year, thereby enabling the country’s best spellers to take part at the international level. The twenty-two Canadian spellers here in Washington qualified to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee by winning their regional bees.
