The Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department will now be better equipped to provide fire services to the local community, thanks to the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a major job creation initiative contained in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced an investment of $405,078 for a new fire hall in the Town of Bridgetown.
“This is an important announcement for a community hurt economically by the downturn in the local forestry and agriculture sectors,” said Mr. Kerr. “The Government of Canada’s Community Adjustment Fund will help provide enhanced fire-protection services and be a stimulus for the local economy.”
This project represents the final phase of a two-phase project to construct a new fire hall. The first phase involved design work and the construction of a building shell. This final phase involves the installation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing, as well as the construction of a new commercial grade kitchen. Additional exterior work includes roofing ventilation, landscaping and paving.
In addition to providing adequate space for firefighting equipment, the new location will provide a safer exit and entry for fire trucks, and space for a meeting/training room, office space, a communications control room and a fire-ready emergency preparedness room.
“This is great news”, said Art Marshall, Mayor of Bridgetown. “The project to build a new Fire Hall serving the Bridgetown Area has been a top priority for our community for many years. The funding provided through ACOA will ensure that this important facility is completed in a timely manner and be in place to support fire and emergency services for years to come.”
The Community Adjustment Fund was established to help workers, families and businesses in communities hardest hit by the global recession and will deliver a total of $1 billion over two years to local economies throughout Canada. Atlantic Canada’s share of CAF is worth more than $100 million and is being delivered by ACOA.
Non-profit organizations; post-secondary institutions; individuals; co-operatives; small and medium-sized enterprises; First Nations governments; and provincial and municipal governments that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011 are invited to submit proposals.
