Bishop's Falls, Newfoundland and Labrador - The Government of Canada is investing more than $216,000 in the Town of Bishop’s Falls for its centennial celebrations. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
The 2009 series of celebrations reflect on a century of the Town’s history, its growth and development, its challenges and accomplishments, and the dedication of people whose persistent efforts have allowed the continued growth of the community.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to support Bishop’s Falls 2009 Inc. as it plans and facilitates a host of centennial celebrations throughout the year,” said Minister Ashfield. “These activities will recognize the people and history of the Town and help strengthen the tourism industry of the entire Exploits region.” “Since we are celebrating our 100th anniversary, we hope to attract ex-patriots and their children to the area, along with the general tourist market,” said George Saunders, Co-Chair, Bishop’s Falls Centennial 2009 Inc. “We have a line-up of activities that will attract new visitors and promote our Town so they will return for future and extended visits.”
The Government of Canada funding includes $50,000, through ACOA’s Business Development Program, which will help provide marketing and technical support for the project including the development of print materials, website, direct mailing, advertising and the rental of sound, lighting and staging equipment. The Department of Canadian Heritage is contributing $65,000, through its Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Program, which offers Canadians more opportunities to take part in activities that feature local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and historic anniversaries in Canada this year. The project will also receive $101,580 through Service Canada’s Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) program for wages and overhead costs. This initiative is being supported by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement.
