WINNIPEG, June 30, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Shelly Glover, Parliamentary Secretary for Official Languages and Member of Parliament (St. Boniface), today announced funding for 14 organizations working in Manitoba's Francophone community.
"Our Government recognizes that linguistic duality is a Canadian characteristic and value worth preserving for future generations," said Minister Moore. "We are proud to support these organizations in heightening the visibility of the Francophone community and highlighting the contribution of Francophones to our society."
"Our Government is supporting the dynamic spirit of Franco-Manitobans," said Ms. Glover. "These organizations affect all sectors of this important community, and their efforts are helping enhance and enrich the vitality of Francophones in Manitoba."
The Government of Canada is providing $3,164,300 to 13 Franco-Manitoban organizations under the Community Life component of the Development of Official-Language Communities Program. This program is designed to foster the vitality of Canada's French- and English-speaking minority communities and enable them to participate fully in all aspects of Canadian life.
In addition, the Government of Canada is granting $142,000 to Canadian Parents for French Manitoba under the Promotion of Linguistic Duality component of the Enhancement of Official Languages Program. This program is designed to help organizations in various sectors develop or pursue activities that foster a better understanding of or appreciation for linguistic duality and strengthen ties between languages and cultures among members of the two official-language communities.
Like the Roadmap for Canada's Linguistic Duality 2008-2013: Acting for the Future, announced on June 19, 2008, support for these organizations reaffirms the Government of Canada's commitment to linguistic duality and the vitality of official-language minority communities. The Roadmap is an unprecedented government-wide investment of $1.1 billion over five years.
