NIAGARA FALLS, June 23, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, Member of Parliament (Niagara Falls), Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced funding for Lundy's Lane Historical Museum.
This funding will be used for the packing, moving, and storage of artefacts as part of a large-scale renovation and expansion project. This project is designed to increase collections storage and office space, create a new visitor centre, and improve accessibility to the museum. This will help prepare the museum for the upcoming War of 1812 bicentennial celebrations.
"By showcasing the history of Niagara Falls, Lundy's Lane Historical Museum allows residents and visitors to the region to learn about the events that have shaped this world-renowned city," said Minister Moore. "Our Government recognizes the importance of all our museums as valued guardians of our heritage, and we are proud to support the improvement of museums that have such a positive impact on this community."
"I am proud to be part of a Government that has made a significant investment in the Lundy's Lane Battlefield Legacy Project," said Minister Nicholson. "This project is a remarkable undertaking commemorating one of the most important events in Canadian history."
"The Lundy's Lane Historical Museum is pleased and very grateful to the Government of Canada for this funding to assist Lundy's Lane Historical Museum to properly catalogue, condition report, pack, and store the Museum's collections in preparation of a major capital expansion of the facility," said Gordon Brown, Chair, Niagara Falls Board of Museums.
Through its collections, Lundy's Lane Historical Museum documents the history of the city of Niagara Falls and the vital role it played in the War of 1812 and the founding of Canada as a nation.
The Government of Canada has provided $44,800 through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
