FERGUS, Ontario, June 1, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Michael Chong, Member of Parliament (Wellington-Halton Hills), today announced funding for the Wellington County Museum and Archives.
This funding will enable the museum to double its archival collection storage area by installing specialized shelving equipment. Construction will begin soon on a new wing to accommodate the additional archival storage shelving.
"With its varied programming and engaging exhibitions, the Wellington County Museum and Archives makes a valuable contribution to the cultural vitality of this region," said Minister Moore. "Our Government understands the importance of the arts and culture in building strong communities, and we are proud to support the enhancement of museums and galleries that have a positive impact on this community."

"The Wellington County Museum and Archives plays an important role in preserving this region's past through its archival collection, which features historical records dating back to the area's first settlement."
"We are delighted with the news of the contribution from the Government of Canada," said Bonnie Callen, Administrator, Wellington County Museum and Archives. "The money will be used to assist with the cost of installing compact, moveable shelving in the new 8100-square-foot archives addition. This type of shelving provides 75 percent more capacity than fixed shelving, and will allow the Archives to continue to collect and make accessible its valuable collection of local history materials."
Surrounded by heritage gardens, the imposing Wellington County Museum and Archives is a designated national historic site housing twelve galleries with collections reflecting the region's history. Exhibitions include decorative arts, textiles, historical displays, travelling exhibitions, and installations by local artists. The museum also organizes a number of community events and activities for all ages.
The Government of Canada has provided $100,000 through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
