Today, Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Royal Glenora Club that will create jobs for Alberta.
"The Royal Glenora Club is home to many of Canada's top athletes and is an important recreational facility for our families,
" said Mr. Hawn. "The Club has served our community well for over 50 years and I'm proud to be part of a government that is investing in the essential infrastructure we need today and in the future.
"
Federal funding of $1 million is being provided by the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program in Canada's Economic Action Plan.
Today's announcement will assist with the extensive rehabilitation of the Royal Glenora Club's ice arena, swimming pool, mechanical systems and amenities. The significant upgrades will enable the facility to maintain its status as an established and respected centre for recreation and fitness in the Edmonton area. The Royal Glenora Club is a multi-use facility that provides services to club members and non-members alike. While it is home to many of Canada's elite competitors and other top-ranked athletes, the facility also serves as an important recreational venue for the public-at-large.
"The Royal Glenora is most appreciative of the federal government's timely assistance for this project,
" said Scott Paterson, President of the Royal Glenora Club. "Glenora is about sport and though we are proud of our many champions, we are most proud of our relationship with the community.
"
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, is part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. RInC will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
