OTTAWA, ONTARIO, June 16, 2009—The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today reminded employers and students that more than 300 Service Canada Centres for Youth (SCCY) across Canada have recently opened for business.
SCCYs help youth improve their job search skills to be competitive in the labour market. As well, they offer employers a simple, free and popular place to advertise job postings so that they can find the best individuals to fill their positions.
“The Government of Canada is helping students get the work experience they need to fully participate in the job market,” said Minister Finley. “In light of the current economy, it is important that we help employers support students and community needs. Service Canada Centres for Youth are a great way for students and employers to connect.”
SCCYs offer a number of in-house and community outreach services specially designed to help students find a job, including detailed job postings in a variety of fields, many links to employers, useful information on workplace health and safety, new student financial assistance measures and other government programs and services.

SCCYs are part of the Government of Canada’s strategy to create the best educated, most skilled and most flexible workforce in the world. The Government underscored this commitment in January when it introduced Canada’s Economic Action Plan, a key component of which is to create more and better opportunities for Canadian workers through skills development.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan contains increased funding of $20 million for Canada Summer Jobs to also help Canadian students acquire skills and work experience. With the additional funding, the Government of Canada will now make $107.5 million available annually through Canada Summer Jobs for the next two years.
