Dartmouth, N.S. - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public that the harvesting of bi-valve molluscs, including oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, quahogs and whelks, for recreational or commercial purposes is prohibited until further notice in the foreshore and waters within 1.6 km of Southern New Brunswick from the Nova Scotia/New Brunswick border to the Canada/United States border and within 1.6 km of the Islands of Grand Manan, The Wolves, Bliss, Hills, Frye, Deer and Campobello.
This closure is due to an increase in levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP).
Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) is a natural occurring toxin often referred to as red tide. This toxin or poison can cause a loss of muscular coordination, paralysis and in severe cases is life threatening.
