OTTAWA, June 13, 2009 - Coming from all walks of life and all parts of Canada, our Canadian poets are as diverse as the country itself. Through their works, they challenge our views, tell our stories, and reflect the world in which we live.
For the last 29 years, the League of Canadian Poets has awarded the Pat Lowther Memorial Award to a female Canadian poet in recognition of a book of poetry published in the preceding year. The awarding of this prize is an important recognition of these talented women and a significant contribution to the vitality of the Canadian literary scene.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate the nominees and winner of this year's Pat Lowther Memorial Award. As well, I want to commend everyone involved with the League of Canadian Poets on their efforts to showcase the talent of women poets in Canada.
