Ottawa, June 3, 2009 - Our Government recognizes that poetry and literature play a major role in enriching the lives of Canadian. The works of our poets allow us to view the world in a new way, to discover our stories, and to appreciate our rich cultural heritage.
Every year, the Griffin Poetry Prizes highlight the achievements of Canadian poets and translators, as well as international poets, who have made their mark in the previous year. The awarding of these prizes is an opportunity to honour the contributions of these talented men and women to our society.
Our Government is proud to offer programs that support the development of the Canadian book publishing industry and the success of Canadian artists. Specifically, our Book Publishing Industry Development Program aims to increase access to the literary works of Canadian writers, and our new Translation Program for Book Publishing will bring the cultural riches of Canada's English- and French-speaking communities to a wider audience.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate this year's finalists and winners. I would also like to pay tribute to the Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry for shining a bright light on the talent of our poets and for encouraging Canadians to read their works.
