REGINA, Saskatchewan, July 24, 2009 − Families, visitors, the young and old are encouraged to visit and learn about the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games at the Canada Pavilion this year at the Regina Buffalo Days from July 29 to August 2, 2009.
“Next winter, Vancouver will host the most competitive sporting event on earth but next weekend the Canada Pavilion will be bringing the 2010 Winter Games to Regina,” said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. “I hope that everyone will come out and visit Regina’s Buffalo Days and make a pit-stop at the Canada Pavilion to learn more about the upcoming 2010 Winter Games.”
The Regina Buffalo Days is a five day event in Saskatchewan's largest midway that attracts over 200,000 people each year to its many exhibits and entertainment venues. Canada Pavilion visitors will have the opportunity to meet representatives from the Government of Canada and learn more about the 2010 Winter Games through a series of educational displays and interactive activities.
Visitors can see the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch, find out when the torch relay will be coming near their community using a giant map and Internet station, try out an Olympic bobsleigh and take a closer look at a sit-ski used in the Paralympic ski events. Miga, Quatchi and Sumi, the 2010 Winter Games mascots – inspired by local Aboriginal mythological creatures – will be on hand to entertain the young and young at heart.
Each year, the Canada Pavilion visits 10 communities across Canada. As the flagship exhibit of the Government of Canada Exhibitions Program, the Canada Pavilion has won numerous prizes since its creation in 2000 and provided information to more than six million visitors.
Many government departments will be showcased at the Canada Pavilion, including the Charities Directorate of the Canada Revenue Agency who will be promoting their "Giving to charity: Information for donors" Web site located at www.cra.gc.ca/donors. It will also be an excellent opportunity for visitors to learn about tax savings, and the regulation surrounding charities. Other departments featured at the Canada Pavilion include Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Canadian Heritage, Canadian Museum of Civilization, National Capital Commission and Service Canada.
