Stoneville, Newfoundland and Labrador
The Local Service District of Stoneville, in Notre Dame Bay, will begin upgrades to its water distribution system with funding of more than $747,000 provided by the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
The funding was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency); the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and James Peckford, chair of the Local Service District of Stoneville.
“This project will greatly improve the water distribution system in the community,” said Minister Ashfield. “Through our investment of nearly $250,000, we are helping this rural community improve its infrastructure and the quality of life for its families.”
This project is for phase one for an upgrade of Stoneville's water distribution system, which will involve the replacement of approximately 1.2 km of existing watermain, complete with services to 43 households.
”The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to ensuring all residents have access to clean, safe water,” said Minister Whalen. “Through our investment of over $423,000, residents of Stoneville will have access to a more secure and efficient water supply system. Strengthening infrastructure remains a priority for our government and supports efforts for vibrant, sustainable communities throughout the province.”
“This new system will provide adequate water supply to all residents of Stoneville,” said Mr. Peckford. “The existing system consists of a small distribution pipe which cannot supply adequate service to residents.”
“I am very pleased to see this investment into the municipal infrastructure of Stoneville,” said Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte. “The improvement being made to the Stoneville water distribution system is tremendous news and yet another example of the value our government places on rural Newfoundland.”
The Government of Canada will contribute $249,052 towards the project while the provincial government will contribute $423,387. The Local Service District of Stoneville will provide $74,716.
The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
