Southern Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador
The federal and provincial governments are providing funding for the Town of Southern Harbour to extend its municipal water and sewer services through a contribution of just over $275,000 from the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
The funding was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency); the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and Southern Harbour Mayor John Penney.
“These extensions to the town’s water and sewer infrastructure will greatly increase the service to the town’s residents,” said Minister Ashfield. “The Government of Canada is pleasaed to provide just under $92,000 for this project. Our goal is to keep Atlantic Canada moving forward by investing in projects that improve municipal infrastructure, enhance the quality of life of residents and make everyday life better for all Canadians.”
“The Provincial Government is pleased to invest over $156,000 in support of water and sewer improvements for residents of Southern Harbour,” said Minister Whalen. “This initiative will extend municipal water main service to 10 additional homes, and sewer main service to 15 additional homes, providing modern, efficient services to families who reside in these properties.”
Through this project, the town will extend its municipal water main to service 10 additional homes and sewer mains to service 15 additional homes.
“The project will help increased water distribution for the town and provide modern sewage disposal services,” said Mayor Penney. “The new mains and services will replace existing substandard services and eliminate future environmental concerns.”
“This water and sewer infrastructure upgrade is a step forward in the future for the Town of Southern Harbour,” said Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue. “Extending this essential service, in addition to replacing existing, aging lines, allows for future development and growth opportunities within in the Town.”
The federal government will contribute $91,937 towards the project while the provincial government will contribute $156,293. The Town of Southern Harbour will provide $27,581.
The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
