Two Labrador tourism initiatives will benefit from support provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative under the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway and Minister responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced an investment of approximately $482,000 for projects at Red Bay and along the Labrador Coastal Drive.
“Our government is committed to making the key investments that will generate local economic activity, put people to work and contribute to the growth of the tourism industry,” said Minister MacKay. “We are confident that the development of the tourism services sector along the Labrador Straits will contribute to the economic development of the entire region.”
The Town of Red Bay will make improvements to the town's cruise ship docking area. The project will improve facilities and develop infrastructure to meet the needs associated with increased cruise ship traffic scheduled for the area. The project will include improved access to the docking area, exterior improvements to buildings in the vicinity of the cruise area, construction of a new floating dock to accommodate cruise ship passengers, improvements to the parking area and bus turn-around, and marketing materials for Red Bay and the surrounding region. The project will receive assistance of $182,864 from the Government of Canada through the CAF programme.
The Labrador Straits Historical Development Corporation will construct highway pull-offs and staging areas along the Labrador Coastal Drive to provide visitors with view- points and rest areas along the Labrador Pioneer Footpath, a tourism-based initiative designed to highlight the cultural, natural and historical development of the region. The Labrador Straits Historical Development Corporation has been the lead agency for tourism development and operations in the region since the early 1980s. The project will receive $298,927 from the Government of Canada through the CAF programme.
