Within the next few months, the residents of Lamèque and the surrounding area will be able to play their favourite sports in a freshly painted arena, thanks to financial support provided by the Government of Canada and the Town of Lamèque.
The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and Mayor of Lamèque Rénald Haché today announced investments of more than $20,000 to assist with the cost of painting the Aréna des Iles.
“The Government of Canada recognizes that modernizing existing community recreational facilities helps to stimulate the economy and improve the health and quality of life of New Brunswickers,” said Minister Ashfield. “Thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program (RInC) as par of Canada’s Economic Action Plan the residents of Lamèque and the surrounding area will be able to gather with friends, families and neighbours to get in shape and have fun in pleasant surroundings.”
“We are pleased with the federal government’s contribution to improving this infrastructure that is so essential to our community,” said Rénald Haché, Mayor of Lamèque. “This initiative will have a positive impact on the local economy and will help us provide the residents of the islands of Lamèque and Miscou with better sports facilities.”
The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is contributing $10,333 to the project under the RInC program, a key economic stimulus measure put forward in Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Town of Lamèque and Aréna des Iles Inc. are also contributing $10,333 each toward the project.
The RInC program is providing $500 million over two years to support upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities, and to encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building.
