Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador
Corner Brook will make major improvements to a popular community space with the support of the Government of Canada’s Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, an economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) today announced an investment of $475,256 for the City of Corner Brook to make significant upgrades to Margaret Bowater Park.
“Community areas such as Margaret Bowater Park, with its green spaces, pool and fitness equipment, encourage an appreciation for nature and outdoor activity,” says Minister of State Ashfield. “We are pleased to provide funding to the City of Corner Brook to make enhancements to this popular park so that it will continue to contribute to the health and well being of Canadians for many years to come.”
This funding will allow the City of Corner Brook to develop a new multipurpose area as well as upgrades to the swimming pool, parking lot and trail system. New park furniture, play equipment and lighting will also be installed.
Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides $500 million over two years for the RInC program to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across Canada.
“We are delighted to receive this funding to support the maintenance and improvement of Margaret Bowater Park,” says Mayor Charles Pender. “Our park is a much-loved space that provides untold benefits to both our city’s residents and its visitors alike.”
The City of Corner Brook is also contributing $427,500 towards the redevelopment of the park. Municipalities, First Nations governments, community organizations and other not-for-profit entities in Atlantic Canada that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011, are invited to submit their proposals.
