REGINA, July 27, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Tom Lukiwski, Member of Parliament (Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre), today announced funding for Aman House for its Youth Aboriginal Cultural Awareness project, which will provide services to help young people overcome challenges they face and address life circumstances. This project will provide access to information, cultural awareness activities, and trained staff who will guide and support cultural, personal, and emotional development.
"Our Government is proud to provide young Aboriginal people with the resources they need to face the challenges in their lives," said Minister Moore. "This project will fill a need within the city of Regina by providing support in a culturally appropriate manner."
"Through organizations such as Regina's Aman House, Aboriginal youth are given support for the daily circumstances they continue to face," said Mr. Lukiwski. "Our Government is proud to assist the Youth Aboriginal Cultural Awareness project in providing ongoing support for Aboriginal youth in Regina."
"We would like to express our gratitude to the Government of Canada for supporting the Youth Aboriginal Cultural Awareness project," said Edmund Jordan, President of Aman House. "This funding will help us continue providing essential services to our youth."
Aman House, incorporated in 1995, provides community-based solutions to address situations faced by Aboriginal youth, including the effects of chronic patterns of abuse and addictions.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $100,000 under the Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centre Initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage's Aboriginal Peoples' Program. This initiative supports community, culturally-based projects for urban Aboriginal young people to improve their social, economic, and personal prospects and to strengthen their cultural identity.
