TERRACE, British Columbia - The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), today announced support to the Terrace Women's Resource Centre Society for a project that addresses the financial literacy needs of women in Terrace, in northern British Columbia.
The Terrace Women's Resource Centre Society will receive $99,384 for its project, Women's Financial Literacy - Life-long and Life-wide. The initiative focuses on the priority areas of economic security and prosperity.
"I am proud of our Government's support for Women's Financial Literacy - Life-long and Life-wide, a much-needed initiative that will strengthen financial literacy and planning among women in the Terrace area," said the Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women). "By improving women's financial literacy, the Terrace Women's Resource Centre Society will empower women, easing their isolation, and increasing their skills and knowledge - in effect, improving their economic security. This project will help vulnerable women work toward full participation in the life of their communities."
"In resource-dependent communities like Terrace, the economic downturn has had a deep impact on women, who must often bear the burden of financial crisis in the family," said Ms. Joan Conway, Co-Chair, Terrace Women's Resource Centre Society. "Thanks to the Government's support for our project, Women's Financial Literacy - Life-long and Life-wide, we are able to provide invaluable support and information to women, including workshops and conferences on such themes as planning for prosperity, dealing with financial crisis, and local resources and services."
The mandate of the Terrace Women's Resource Centre Society is: Northern women, working in community, advancing the rights of women and families from a feminist perspective. The Society aims to build capacity in women and families through a variety of services, including drop-in, outreach, advocacy and referral services; courses, workshops and discussion forums; the critical examination of policy and the recommendation of changes; and the development of a strong and diverse membership base.
Funding for the Women's Financial Literacy - Life-long and Life-wide project comes from the Women's Community Fund of the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada. The Women's Community Fund supports projects at the local, regional and national levels.
Status of Women Canada is a federal government agency working to promote equality for women and their full participation in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.
