WINNIPEGThe Government of Canada is pleased to provide additional support to the West Central Women's Resource Centre for its initiative to help women address the economic security, housing, violence and parenting issues they face.
"I am proud to announce supplemental funding to West Central Women's Resource Centre, a community-based organization that empowers women to help themselves, their families and their community lead safer, healthier lifestyles," said the Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women). "With this support, the organization will be able to respond to the needs of women in the community, giving them the skills they need to achieve economic independence, and to demonstrate leadership in their families and their communities."
"We are pleased to have the continued support of the Government of Canada for our project, which has had a greater-than-anticipated demand for the services," said Ms. Jackie Hogue, Executive Director of the West Central Women's Resource Centre. "This new funding will enable us to help more women gain the skills and knowledge they require to access financial, housing and other resources to meet their basic needs."
West Central Women's Resource Centre will receive a supplement of $9,520 for its Women's Economic Security and Housing Project. This is in addition to the original $185,381 the organization received for the initiative's first phase. The supplemental funding will allow the Centre to serve a greater number of women and will cover costs for additional volunteer mentors, supplies and training for volunteers.
Funding for the project comes from the Women's Community Fund of the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada. This Fund supports eligible organizations in carrying out projects at the local, regional and national levels.
The West Central Women's Resource Centre works to empower women to help themselves, their families and their community toward safer, healthier lifestyles. Based in the diverse West Central neighbourhood of Winnipeg, the Centre's priorities are to provide support to women and their families, and assist in breaking down social isolation.
