Cap-Santé, July 9, 2009 – Acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Ministre des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire, Michel Matte, Member of the National Assembly for Portneuf, today joined Sylvie Boucher, Member of Parliament for Beauport-Limoilou, acting on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, in announcing that the City of Cap-Santé will receive $1,571,668 in joint government funding under the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) to extend its domestic sewer system to the eastern limits of the city.
The project involves laying collector mains along Highway 138, Noreau Street and de la Falaise Street, building two pumping stations and modifying the pumping system at the main Notre-Dame station in order to boost capacity. These improvements will directly benefit some 180 local residents.
Completion of this project requires a total eligible investment of $2,357,503 under component 1 of the MRIF. The governments of Quebec and Canada have each contributed $785,834 toward the work, for a total of $1,571,668 in combined government funding, while the City of Cap-Santé invests $785,835 in the project.
Cap-Santé Mayor Jeanne Noreau said she is delighted to see this project, which promises to enhance the well-being of citizens and further the development of the municipality, come to fruition.
The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund is a cost-sharing initiative of the Government of Quebec and Government of Canada that makes $470 million in funding available to Quebec municipalities and non-governmental organizations. With the financial participation of these municipalities and organizations, this initiative could result in the execution of more than $700 million in infrastructure work. The objectives of the MRIF are to improve community infrastructure, the quality of the environment and citizens’ quality of life, and to promote long-term economic growth.
The program, which is in force until March 31, 2010, is administered by Quebec’s Ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire. Canada Economic Development is responsible for delivering the federal portion of the MRIF on behalf of the Government of Canada.
