On June 23, 2009, Mr. Jay Josefo of Toronto was appointed as a member of the NRC Council, a group of science, technology and business leaders who provide strategic direction for the organization.
"I am pleased that Mr. Josefo will be working with us over the next three years," says NRC President Dr. Pierre Coulombe. "His extensive experience in law and business will make him a distinct asset to NRC as we take new steps to advance innovation, research and development in Canada."
In his legal practice, Mr. Josefo focuses primarily on labour and employment law, occupational health and safety, human rights and civil litigation. He is also a Vice-Chair of the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal. Over the past decade, he has served as a board member for various organizations and citizens' groups.
"I look forward to learning more about NRC and the important work it performs," says Mr. Josefo. "I hope that my background and experience will help me contribute to the good governance of the organization, and that my legal and HR knowledge and perspective will be put to good use."
NRC Council consists of the President and up to 21 members appointed by the federal government for a three-year renewable term. Members are responsible for providing effective, independent governance in support of policies and strategies related to NRC's business affairs. The Council provides leadership and vision to NRC in the public interest and fosters ethical, responsible decision making within NRC.
