The Town of Paradise will upgrade its wellness complex with the support of $564,000 from the Government of Canada’s Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a key economic stimulus initiative under the federal Economic Action Plan.
Senator Fabian Manning made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). The town will also provide $507,967 to support the project.
“The Town of Paradise is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Senator Manning. “And the community’s leadership is to be commended for their emphasis on the importance of physical fitness and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.”
“The $500 million federal Recreational Infrastructure Canada program has been designed to help generate local economic activity while supporting needed improvements to recreational infrastructure in communities across Canada,” said Senator Manning. “The contribution being made through the RInC program will help ensure that members of this community will have access to the Paradise Wellness Complex on McNamara Drive for decades to come.”
The project will involve the completion of Phase 1 improvements to the Wellness Complex. The work will see upgrades to the second floor of the building, including additions to the sprinkler system, improvements to the elevator system, as well as mechanical, electrical and window upgrades.
“The improvements we are planning for the Wellness Complex will encourage increased participation in physical fitness activity, which ultimately will lead to improved health and quality of life of the town’s residents,” said Paradise Mayor Ralph Wiseman.
Through RInC, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is providing $500 million dollars to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities across the country. Typically the federal government will fund up to 33 per cent of the eligible costs of a project. The remaining funding will be leveraged from other project stakeholders such as provincial, territorial or municipal governments and other partners.
Municipalities, First Nations governments, community organizations and other not-for-profit entities in Atlantic Canada that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011, are invited to submit their proposals.

A total of $500 million over two years has been set aside through RInC to support upgrades and repairs to recreational facilities in communities throughout Canada. ACOA delivers RInC in Atlantic Canada. The fund, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan, will help mitigate the impacts of the global economic recession by increasing construction activity in the recreational sector.
Municipalities, First Nations governments, community organizations and other not-for-profit entities in Atlantic Canada that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011, are invited to apply.
