OTTAWA, July 28, 2009 - The Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval is an appropriate time for Canadians to recall the courage and tenacity shown by Acadians to ensure the survival of their community, culture and language.
The Great Upheaval began on July 28, 1755, and continued up to 1763. Today, thousands of Acadians preserve the memory of this event, while showing their pride in the efforts undertaken over the years to safeguard the future of their community. Our Government recognizes the energy and drive of all those who continue to work tirelessly for the development of the Acadian community and Canadian society as a whole. Acadians are truly a source of pride and inspiration for all Canadians.
On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I invite Canadians to consider the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval an opportunity to learn more about the history of the Acadians, their symbols, their institutions, and their contribution to our rich and diverse culture.
