GASPÉ, July 24, 2009 - On behalf of the Government of Canada, Steven Blaney, Member of Parliament (Lévis-Bellechasse), today attended the protocol ceremony for celebrations of the 475th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's arrival in Gaspé Bay. In his speech, Mr. Blaney reaffirmed Government of Canada funding for activities planned in honour of this historic event. Funding of $1,002,766 will be provided by the departments of Canada Economic Development, Canadian Heritage, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
"In 2009, Canadians and visitors are celebrating an unforgettable legacy–475 years of history, culture, and discovery," said Mr. Blaney. "The Government of Canada is proud to be partner in these festivities and to invest in major historical events that provide substantial economic and social benefits for Canadian communities."
On this historic occasion anniversary of French presence in North America for 475 years, the Corporation for the 2009 Gaspé Celebrations offers a wide range of festivities throughout this pivotal year. The people of Gaspé and visitors from around the world are invited to share in unforgettable cultural, historical, and heritage moments.
