Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island - Visitors to Charlottetown can now learn even more about the Birthplace of Confederation by downloading three new walking tour podcasts. The self-guided i-walk tours are available thanks to a $15,000 investment by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) under the Innovative Communities Fund.
The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (ACOA), was joined by Lee Gauthier, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Charlottetown & the PEI Convention Partnership, to try out the innovative new tool at Founders' Hall.
“The Government of Canada recognizes that tourism is a vital contributor to the region’s economy. We are continually seeking out innovative initiatives that contribute to the long-term growth of the sector,” said Minister Shea. “Initiatives like the downloadable “i-walk” tour opens up the opportunity to reach an expanded audience through popular, leading edge technologies.”
In addition to the many activities offered by Tourism Charlottetown & PEI Convention Partnership, individuals can now explore Canada’s past by simply downloading one of three tours to their iPod, iPhone or Blackberry. The tours begin at the Walk & Sea Visitor Centre, located in Founders' Hall, and allow participants to explore Charlottetown’s historic Great George Street, the popular waterfront and the supernatural Ghosts & Gallows tour.
“These i-walks are just one more way that people can learn about the history of Charlottetown and our place in Canadian History.” explains Gauthier. “I-walks are a great way to bring the past into the present.”
The tours are available for download now and will remain online year-round. For more information, please visit www.walkandseacharlottetown.com/i-walks.
