Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador - Stephenville will continue to revitalize its downtown area, with support from the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative under the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Senator Ethel Cochrane, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, Minister for the Atlantic Gateway and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced an investment of $91,957 from the Government of Canada, to support the town of Stephenville’s business area revitalization project.
“Today’s announcement builds on the $2.9 million in project funding announced last month by the Government of Canada to support local initiatives through the federal Economic Action Plan and the Municipal-Rural Infrastructure Fund,” said Senator Cochrane. “The enhancements to Stephenville’s downtown business area will help create direct and indirect employment and will enable the area to attract more residents and visitors.”
Improvements to the downtown Stephenville business area will include the installation of interlocking block, driveway ramps, curb and sidewalks. The project is part of a larger redevelopment plan for downtown Stephenville and will complement previous development along Main Street.
Stephenville’s Downtown Business Improvement Association will also provide $61,304 for the project.
“Revitalization of the commercial core of Stephenville will have significant benefits for both the town and the surrounding area and with these further enhancements to the area, downtown Stephenville has the potential to become an attraction for residents and visitors alike, said Bob Byrnes, chair of the Downtown Business Improvement Association. “We believe that enhancing the aesthetic value of the downtown area will help draw people through the area and increase retail sales, thereby positively impacting the local economy.
Over the next two years, the Community Adjustment Fund will deliver a total of $1 billion in economic stimulus to communities across the country in support of local economic development.
