Kiamika, Quebec, August 27, 2009 – The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today joined David Whissell, Quebec's Ministre du Travail and Ministre responsable de la région des Laurentides , acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Ministre des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l'Occupation du territoire , in announcing that the Municipality of Kiamika will receive $24,522 in joint government financial assistance under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec .
The proposed project involves the installation of recreational infrastructure in the Kiamika municipal park. More specifically, the work calls for the laying of a volleyball court and tennis court to enhance the municipality's recreational facilities and build on the outdoor improvements initiated in 2002. These upgrades will directly benefit the municipality's 2,300 or so permanent and summer residents, while renewing its community infrastructure from a sustainable development standpoint.
“These improvements will allow Kiamika's residents to enjoy an ever more attractive and friendly environment that is conducive to the practice of a wide variety of family sports activities. Our communities across Canada need the kind of public infrastructure that can continue ensuring the high level of quality of life that has become our country's trademark. That is why we have implemented a broad action plan that promises to foster job creation and secure the viability of our municipal infrastructure around the country,” noted Minister of State Lebel.
“In supporting this major project, the Government of Quebec is moving forward to ensure the province's municipalities have infrastructure that suits their unique realities while fostering sustainable development, a key element of any modern, wealth-building economy. By injecting new capital into the Quebec Infrastructure Plan , our government is looking to accelerate the execution of numerous infrastructure projects throughout the province in an effort to improve the well-being of Quebecers, create jobs and promote a high-performance economy. In acting now, our government hopes to leave Quebec municipalities a legacy of quality infrastructure with which to face the challenges of the future,” added Minister Whissell.
Completion of this project will necessitate an overall eligible investment of $36,783. The governments of Quebec and Canada will each contribute $12,261 toward the work, for a total of $24,522 in combined government funding, while the Municipality of Kiamika will for its part invest $12,261 in the project.
The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec is a cost-sharing initiative aimed at funding the execution of infrastructure projects in communities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. These communities are thus able to use this assistance to improve infrastructure that is in major need of revitalization, including water treatment plants, water supply systems and cultural and sports centres.
An unprecedented funding commitment on the part of the Government of Canada, the Building Canada Fund – Quebec provides stable and predictable funding to support infrastructure projects. In Quebec, nearly $4 billion will be allocated to that end.
The contribution announced today has been awarded under Canada's Economic Action Plan . For more on this plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca .
