OTTAWA, August 7, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Competition Tribunal, today announced the appointment Mr. Elio Luongo as a lay member of the Tribunal.
“Mr. Luongo has expertise in business administration and accounting that will be beneficial to the Tribunal,” said Minister Clement. “His experience in these areas will help the Tribunal as it hears and renders decisions on competition issues.”
Prior to his appointment as Vancouver Managing Partner, Mr. Luongo was Partner-in-Charge of KPMG’s Greater Vancouver Area Tax practice. He also served KPMG’s Partnership Board of Directors. Mr. Luongo is a Director of the Vancouver Board of Trade and sits on the Board of Governors of the Business Council of British Columbia.
Mr. Luongo graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor in Business Administration, majoring in Economics and Accounting. He received his chartered accountant designation in 1986.
The Competition Tribunal is a specialized tribunal that combines expertise in economics and business with legal expertise. It is composed of judicial and non-judicial, or lay, members. The Tribunal is a strictly adjudicative body that operates independently of any government department.
