Blake Richards, Member of Parliament for Wild Rose, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support to enable the Town of Sundre to complete a study on reducing the risk of flooding and minimize erosion resulting from the Red Deer River.
" Our Government is taking action to assist the Town of Sundre, " said MP Richards. " I have been active on this file for many months alongside community members and I'm proud that our funding will better equip the town to proceed with its future planning. "
This study will provide a long-term solution to minimize erosion and reduce the flood risk to the Town of Sundre. The study will include a site reconnaissance, fish habitat assessment, development of environmental mitigation measures, and a detailed engineering design and construction plan. The implementation of the study's recommendations is expected to create additional short-term jobs for the local economy.
Federal funding of $84,400 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
" We are ready to take action and hope that local labour is used to make it happen, " said Roy Cummings, Mayor of the Town of Sundre.
The project will lead to a better understanding of how to minimize economic losses that may result from the continued erosion of the riverbank and the potential flooding in local areas. Long-term ecological benefits of the project also include mitigating future erosion to the banks of the Red Deer River and minimizing the sedimentation that the erosion creates.
" This is an effort to protect our community and this is an effort that has been promoted by our Prime Minister and we are very pleased by that, " said Myron Thompson, Chairman of the Save our Sundre Committee.
A part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) is a two-year, $1-billion national program that will provide an economic stimulus by supporting projects that create jobs and maintain employment in rural communities.
The fund will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries, for instance forestry, mining, agriculture and fisheries, and communities that depend on the manufacturing industry. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
