PETTY HARBOUR – MADDOX COVE (NL) – AUGUST 14, 2009 – The Town of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove will construct the Bidgood’s Tourism Information Centre with federal funding support provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF), a key economic stimulus initiative under the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Senator Fabian Manning, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), today announced an investment of over $124,000 for the Town of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove.
“The establishment of the Bidgood’s Tourism Information Centre is a natural and valuable addition to tourism infrastructure of Petty-Harbour-Maddox Cove, said Senator Manning. “As a stimulus project, the construction of the Centre will generate local economic activity, support jobs and contribute to the longer term economic development of the community. And the Centre’s association with the Bidgood family name links it to the unique role Bidgood’s has played in the economic development of the region.”
The Bidgood’s Tourism Information Centre will be located in the centre of a vibrant fishing community, in close proximity to St. John’s and complemented by gift shops, restaurants, B&B’s, boat tours, historical exhibits and the natural beauty of a picturesque Newfoundland fishing village. Construction of the Bidgood’s Tourism Information Centre will also allow the Town of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove to proceed with Phase three of its tourism development plan, which includes site development and parking, signage, marketing and promotion.
“This initiative allows us to build upon recent upgrades to the waterfront area and provide tourists with an interpretive outdoor experience when visiting the town,” said Nat Hutchings, Mayor, Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove. “The natural beauty of our area is already an attraction for visitors and enhancements to our infrastructure like this provide them with a better way to fully experience our history and culture.”
The Bidgood family is providing the land on which the new tourism information centre will be constructed.
The Bidgood family name is very well known to residents as an integral part of local commerce and the grocery trade, particularly in terms of traditional Newfoundland and Labrador fare. Senator Manning noted that with the strong sense of community pride demonstrated by the family, it is fitting that the Bidgood name be associated with a facility that will welcome visitors to the town.
Over the next two years, the federal Community Adjustment Fund will deliver a total of $1 billion in economic stimulus to communities across the country in support of local economic development.
