Residents in the Greater Fredericton Area will soon enjoy the benefits of a state-of-the-art business and leisure facility, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada. The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), today announced a funding commitment of $2.5 million for the Grant Harvey Centre to be constructed on Fredericton's south side.
“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that generate local and regional economic opportunities,” said Minister Ashfield. “ACOA's investment in the Grant Harvey Centre will help strengthen the local economic infrastructure, creating a hub for commerce that will support a wide range of business activities for the region.”
The project involves designing and building a multi-use business and leisure complex that will include a business and community centre, community rooms and two ice rinks. The state-of-the-art facility will enhance the region's recreational opportunities, create employment and yield substantial economic benefits.
“We are very pleased that the federal government continues to support business and leisure activities in the greater Fredericton area,” said Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside. “The design work on the Grant Harvey Centre is nearly complete and we expect to begin issuing tenders this fall and open this facility in 2011.”
The Government of Canada is providing $2.5 million to the project through ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund. The funding commitment announced today is in addition to the $1 million the Government of Canada announced toward the facility in 2006 through the Canada-New Brunswick Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.
