LA RONGE, Saskatchewan, August 31, 2009 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament (Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River), today announced funding for the Jim Brady Métis Local #19 for its La Ronge Cross-Cultural Awareness and Physical Health Project.
This project is a partnership between Jim Brady Métis Local #19 and the Kikinahk Friendship Centre. Through this initiative, Aboriginal youth will increase their knowledge of Métis culture and heritage. They will also improve their physical health and build valuable life skills through hands-on participation in workshops, sport events, and historical tours.
"Our Government is committed to supporting projects that help Aboriginal young people contribute to the growth of their community and Canada," said Minister Moore. "By getting these young people involved in the management of the project, we are building future leaders and role models."
"I am pleased that our Government is supporting a project that helps Aboriginal young people develop life skills, leadership, and knowledge for the future," said Mr. Clarke. "Today's investment will help Aboriginal youth celebrate and strengthen their culture."
"The project will provide young people with an opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities that recognize and honour the Aboriginal contribution to the cultural fabric of our community and assist in the development of an Aboriginal Youth Council," said Al Rivard, President of Jim Brady Métis Local #19. "Through the Council, young people will have an active role in maintaining the initiatives begun under this project and provide leadership in the community."
The Jim Brady Métis Local #19 was created to promote the Métis community in La Ronge and the surrounding area. It emphasizes economic development, social awareness, and opportunities for Métis people.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $74,984 under the Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centre Initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage's Aboriginal Peoples' Program. This initiative supports community, culturally-based projects for urban Aboriginal young people to improve their social, economic, and personal prospects and to strengthen their cultural identity.
