Riverview, New Brunswick - The Town of Riverview will soon offer better recreational facilities to its residents and visitors, thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a key economic stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Rob Moore, MP for Fundy-Royal, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), and Mayor of Riverview, Clarence Sweetland, today announced investments of $705,000 for improvements to important recreational structures and facilities in Riverview.
“The Government of Canada, through the Economic Action Plan, is helping to keep Canada’s economy on track by investing in upgrading recreational facilities, thus creating local construction jobs and encouraging economic activity right away,” said MP Moore. “Our investment of $232,000 through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will ensure that residents from Riverview and the surroundings will continue to come together and enjoy local recreational facilities and services for decades to come.”
The project involves improvements to several outdoor amenities, renovations to the Kinsmen Recreation Centre and upgrades to aquatic facilities. “The Town of Riverview is very pleased with this announcement,” said Mayor Sweetland. “We are excited about the improvements that will take place in our recreational facilities and we know they will be welcomed by Riverview residents. This Federal program enables us to move ahead with projects such as these that would otherwise likely be put off indefinitely”.
Under RInC, the Government of Canada will typically fund up to 33 per cent of eligible costs. The remaining funding will be leveraged from other project stakeholders such as provincial, territorial, municipal and other partners. The federal contribution to any project receiving funding under the program will not exceed $1 million. Projects will be selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011.
Municipalities, First Nations governments, community organizations and other not-for-profit entities in Atlantic Canada that have eligible projects that can be completed before March 31, 2011, are invited to submit their proposals. A total of $500 million over two years has been set aside through RInC to support upgrades and repairs to recreational facilities in communities throughout Canada. ACOA delivers RInC in Atlantic Canada. The fund, part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, will help mitigate the impacts of the global economic recession by increasing construction activity in the recreational sector.
