LOGY BAY–MIDDLE COVE–OUTER COVE, Newfoundland and Labrador, August 11, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, today welcomed a significant investment by the Canada Foundation for Innovation ( CFI ) in support of new state-of-the-art infrastructure at three research institutions in Atlantic Canada.
This investment in Canada's research infrastructure will help stimulate the economy by employing the workers to build the labs and equipment needed to conduct cutting-edge research as well as the technicians and scientists to efficiently run them.
“Through the CFI , our government is creating leading-edge facilities to attract world-class researchers,” said Minister Clement. “These investments make a difference in the lives of Canadians. From project development to the laboratory, Canadians will benefit from the economic stimulus these investments provide.”
These three projects, through the CFI 's Leading Edge Fund and New Initiatives Fund, will help Canada's best and brightest researchers conduct cutting-edge research with world-class equipment and facilities.
Minister Clement spoke at Memorial University of Newfoundland to formally celebrate more than $7.7 million in funding allocated to three universities in Atlantic Canada. This funding is part of a total investment of more than $665 million for 133 projects announced under the Leading Edge Fund and New Initiatives Fund:
- $7 249 818 was awarded to two projects at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia's Dalhousie University under the Leading Edge Fund, which enables institutions to build on already successful and productive initiatives supported by past CFI investments.
- $535 598 was awarded to one project at Nova Scotia's Saint Mary's University under the New Initiatives Fund, which aims to enhance Canada's capacity in promising new areas of research and technology development.
An additional $2 335 625 was awarded under the Infrastructure Operating Fund, which helps institutions with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with the new infrastructure.
The CFI is an independent corporation created by the federal government to fund research infrastructure and is funded by the Government of Canada.
